SINGAPORE: The Attorney-General's
Chambers (AGC) rejected the conditional offer made by Hougang resident Madam
Vellama Marie Muthu in the Hougang by-election case.
On 21 June Madam
Vellama had offered to withdraw her case, if Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong
issues a statement in Parliament, stating that a by-election must be called
within three months, or within a reasonable time, when an electoral seat becomes
vacant.
In a statement to the media, the AGC said the condition is a
hypothetical question and has nothing to do with Mdm Vellama's case, which
relates specifically to the by-election for the single ward of
Hougang.
The AGC said it intends to proceed with its application to
strike out Mdm Vellama's case, which it said has become moot after the
by-election in Hougang was held last month.
The AGC said the
continuation of Mdm Vellama's case is an abuse of the court process.
