KUALA LUMPUR: A northbound Ekspres Rakyat from Singapore went off the rails about 100m from the Bukit Timah station in the republic, causing Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad’s (KTMB) inter-city services in the south to be disrupted. The train, which was carrying 60 passengers, left the Tanjong Pagar station at 8am but went off the track 17 minutes later. No casualties were reported. “The passengers were brought back to the Tanjong Pagar station and given a full refund,” KTMB said in a statement here.

Following the incident, the Ekspres Rakyat service from Singapore was cancelled while the Ekspres Rakyat service from Butterworth to Singapore and Ekspres Senandung (Kuala Lumpur-Singapore) ended their journeys at the Johor Baru Sentral station.

The statement added that until further notice, JB Sentral will be the destination or departure point in lieu of Tanjong Pagar for all Singapore KTMB services.
Also, according to the statement, the situation was expected to be rectified by today.

It added that passengers, who had booked tickets, could claim refunds or reschedule their journey dates. For more information, commuters are advised to call KTMB’s helpline at 1-300-88-5862.

In Singapore, checks by Bernama found workers repairing damaged tracks while waiting for a heavy-duty crane to arrive from Gemas to lift the locomotive, which was in a tilted position off the tracks.
