A man in China's southeastern Fujian province who eight years ago married a Vietnamese woman and with whom had a son has been diagnosed HIV positive, as have the two young boys, Fujian-based news website Haidu reports.

The man, surnamed Wang, was diagnosed with the virus this June after visiting a local clinic when sores began appearing on his body. His two sons were also tested and found to have HIV.

Wang's mother said she first met the Vietnamese woman, who is unnamed in the source story, while she was being held captive in a sheep pen clutching a baby boy and in clear distress. The woman, unable to speak Chinese, gestured to Wang's mother, begging her to take the infant to a doctor for medical attention.

When Wang's mother returned with the sick child, and bought the woman's freedom for 20,000 yuan (US$3,200), which she borrowed from her elder brother. The introduced the woman to her son and arranged for the two to wed.

Wang's new wife became seriously ill shortly after giving birth to the couple's first son, dying just a year later.

According to Wang's mother, the Vietnamese woman was Wang's second wife. Wang was previously married but divorced after his wife had disappeared for seven years. Wang's mother said her Vietnamese daughter-in-law had lived with the family for less than three years before passing away and sympathized with her for being traded like a commodity.
