And when the STOMPer who called the Traffic Police checked with the latter, he was told that the stickers could be purchased anywhere, and that the vehicles bearing them may not necessarily belong to police personnel.

Oliver saw this vehicle parked this way on Friday Oct 10 at about 8:40 pm along Sophia Road, and recounts the incident in an email to STOMP:

"After queuing for 15 minutes at the traffic light at Selegie Road turning left to Sophia Road, I realised that a truck was blocking the road at the beginning of the Sophia Road slope (this road is a one-way road).

"I alighted from my car and went to see what was happening. The truck couldn't go any further as two cars were parked on the left-hand side illegally on the double yellow line and blocked its way.

"One of the cars (pictures attached) shows a 'Polis Singapura' sticker, which is quite surprising as it was illegally parked.

"At around 9.15pm the traffic police arrived. The officer told us that this sticker could be purchased anywhere and that this car was not necessarily owned by a member of the police force.

"This is quite surprising in any case: either a member of the police force was illegally parked, or someone who is not a member of the police has a police sticker on its window..."

This police sticker phenomenon had been around for more than 20 yrs. Now think this. If you can buy unit stickers or road tax holders which incidentally are what the stickers were designed for in the first place in your army camp's sundry store, it's the same with the police academy as well as their mess. Other than the police crest, the other popular sticker is that of the CNB. I always have a good laugh to myself whenever drivers try to give the Chen Hu Lan glare when they alight from cars with those stickers whenever I look on their inconsiderate behaviour. Just what do they think they are going to do even if they are really from the police force. Under official regulations, it is an offence to identify yourself as a policeman if there is no legal basis for doing so. All a citizen need to do if he feels that there is a case of abuse of power, he should just call 999 and then we'll see what kind of trouble the man is going to get into. With WKS under heat, email the guy about the case. Anyway, it's really stupid to display that. It'll just attract poodle haters to scratch or kick the vehicle. Some deterrence indeed if that was the intent of the one who displayed the sticker.
