<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->ONE of Singapore's top economists and civil servants has resigned from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to take up a job in the Middle East.
Dr Khor Hoe Ee, assistant managing director, left Singapore yesterday but the MAS said his last day at work will be today.
The Straits Times understands that he is joining the Abu Dhabi Council of Economic Development.
It is also understood that Dr Khor, who is in his early 50s, will not be immediately replaced.
When asked about his replacement, the MAS said it has 'a capable and experienced team in place' and that the key functions overseen by Dr Khor 'have continued to run smoothly under the guidance of our deputy managing directors Teo Swee Lian and Ong Chong Tee'.
Ms Teo is in charge of prudential supervision, while Mr Ong takes care of monetary policy, investment and research, and development and external relations.
Dr Khor has also stepped down as president of the Economics Society of Singapore, a position he has held since 2001. He has been succeeded by Assistant Professor Euston Quah of Nanyang Technological University. The non-profit society brings together economists and other professionals with an interest in economics.
In his 12 years with the MAS, Dr Khor was responsible for the international, macro-economic surveillance, economic policy, economic research and financial stability portfolios, the agency said yesterday.
'Hoe Ee has made many important contributions in MAS in the areas of economic research and monetary policy, and in developing talented young economists,' said MAS managing director Heng Swee Kiat in an e-mail to The Straits Times.
'He has also helped to catalyse deeper interest in empirical research in his capacity as the president of the Economics Society. We deeply appreciate Hoe Ee's service to MAS, and wish him every success in his new endeavours.'
Dr Khor obtained his bachelor's degree at the University of Rochester in New York and his PhD in economics at Princeton University in the United States.
He joined the MAS in July 1996 and was made senior executive director of the economics division. He was appointed assistant managing director of economics in 2001.
Before joining MAS, he worked at the International Monetary Fund in Washington for 15 years, where he was deputy division chief.
His field of work there included the Caribbean Island economies such as Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic, Mexico, the Maldives, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia.
Dr Khor is the latest in a string of high-level executives to leave Singapore for the Middle East. [email protected]
