KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — A Singapore film production company today denied rumours that Hong Kong superstar Tony Leung has been tapped to play the republic’s founding father in an upcoming movie about the island state’s separation from Malaysia.
Dismissing the widely-reported rumours of Leung’s role in the movie “1965”, Homerun Asia chief executive officer Daniel Yun said parts have yet to firmed up for the production.
“The rumours on the cast are factually inaccurate. The casting is on-going and no cast is confirmed,” Yun said today on Homerun’s website.
The US$5 million (RM15 million) film is a co-production between Homerun and China’s Zonbo Media, with Singapore permanent resident Lee Thean-jeen in the director’s seat.
On Wednesday, Lianhe Wanbao and Chinese online portal Sina reported the casting of top Hong Kong and American stars in the movie.
According to both sources, Leung was set to play a young Lee Kuan Yew in the movie.
Heavyweights Maggie Cheung and Hollywood actress Julianne Moore were also rumoured to star in the movie.
The film is scheduled to start production early this September, Sin Chew daily reported today.
