An athlete who required medical attention while competing in a world-famous triathlon in WA’s South West has died.

The competitor was taken to hospital soon after needing help during the swim portion of Sunday’s three-leg Ironman endurance test in Busselton.

“Sadly, the athlete has since passed away,” Ironman in WA shared on Facebook.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the athlete’s family, whom we will continue to offer our support.”

Event organisers said onsite water safety and medical personnel had acted quickly to provide the athlete with support.

More than 3500 athletes were registered to take the starting line on Sunday for the 20th year of what is a “bucket-list race for athletes all over the world”.

More than 1600 of them had travelled from outside of WA to compete.

The race involved a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run.

The men’s division was won by Loic Draoulec, while Sally Wood was the women’s champion.

The event also hosted the Ironman 70.3, which covers half the distance of the full triathlon.

Italian Gregory Barnaby claimed the win in the men’s side of the competition, moving into first place in the Ironman Pro Series with one race to go in New Zealand.

In the women’s, Spanish athlete Marta Sanchez claimed her second Ironman 70.3 victory of the year.
