The retrenchment of 700 workers of Chin Heng garment factory yesterday was a testimony of the failure of tripartism to protect the rights of ordinary workers. In spite of frequent public statements issued by NTUC exhorting employers to consider all other options first before retrenching workers, the factory went ahead with a massive “culling” exercise anyway.
To add salt to the workers’ wounds, the shameless state media TODAY tried to add a positive spin to their plight to highlight NTUC Deputy Chief Josephine Teo’s half-baked efforts to secure a better deal for them. (read full article here)
In the first place, the workers should be given the right to select their own leader to negotiate with the employer directly instead of via a third party - the toothless Singapore Industrial and Services Employees’ Union (Siseu) helmed by a PAP MP, Ms Josephine Teo.
