Tesla Model 3 Drives Straight Into Overturned Truck In What Seems To Be Autopilot Failure

Earlier today, on Taiwan’s National Highway 1 near the Zhongshan High Chiayi Water Section, a Tesla Model 3 crashed right smack into the roof of an overturned truck trailer. It appears that the wreck was caused by the Tesla’s Autopilot system not detecting the large rectangular object right in front of it, in broad daylight and clear weather. We have seen Autopilot failures like this before, especially ones involving large, immobile objects.

looks like it did try to stop when it detected the man on the highway. From the smoke from the tires. Then it did try to stop again just before hitting the truck.

Just didnt detect early enough.

I think auto-drive is a very bad thing. It might only work if AI has improved to a near-human level, you can have conversations with your car like a Transformer.

Have to start somewhere.

I did drive a Tesla Model X in Las Vegas over Xmas. The autopilot mode is quite cool. It is very useful in traffic jam situations. Where you have to inch the car bit by bit. Very sian. I could do other things while it did that for me.

It does get a bit scary when it is driving winding roads at 100km/h. It follows the lane markings but sometimes the lane will fork into a turning lane and it follows the markings into the turning lane at times which required me to over ride.

So it has its limitations at this point.

Auto park was awesome although it does take a bit of trying to get it to sense the parking lot in the first place.

So it is still very early but good enough to be used but with supervision.

True indeed ...even the very auto mobile itself had a host of teething problems when it had to share the road with horse driven carriages

Yes indeed. When I was down at Yellowstone National Park, we did some horse riding and carriage. The guides were telling us how there was both automobiles and horses on the roads in Yellowstone. And how the cars being so noisy would scare the horses.

I had actually seen in some 3rd world countries where automobiles ,bullock carts ,horse driven carriages ,hand pulled rickshaws in the same road
