Over 25 Million Flights Blocked by China's Social Credit System This Year

China’s social credit system is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. Last year the government blocked 11.1 million flights, and this year that number has more than doubled.

On Monday, Meng Min, a spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission, announced that the purchase of 25.4 million flights and almost 5.9 million high-speed rail tickets were restricted as of the end of May.

Those who have been deemed unruly or caught disrupting train services were banned from buying tickets for up to 180 days.

Violations include smoking on trains, selling fake tickets and using fake IDs, among other illicit activities. To make matters even more difficult for troublesome travelers, offenders’ names are published on ticketing website 12306.cn and China’s social credit website, creditchina.gov.cn on the first working day of each month.

Social credit system planning started in 2014, with the aim of all social credit scores being publicly available by 2020. The idea behind this system is to ensure the integrity of China’s citizens, while exposing the dishonest.

When we asked the opinions of Chinese citizens from two different generations on their thoughts on travel bans, both thought the system was overall reasonable. They concluded that in today’s fast-paced technological world, credibility is important to avoid financial and social issues.

Let this be a reminder to think twice before eating on the metro, cheating on exams, flicking coins into plane engines or cracking open emergency exit doors on planes.

What do you think of China’s emerging social credit system and the potential implementation of punishments like travel bans?

"My credits are high, so it gets people like me excited because it gives us a sense of achievement and honor. It feels kind of like being rewarded if your credits are higher. It makes you feel special. I think it’s a reasonable system. It definitely motivates us to behave in a more socially responsible way, since things like our plane tickets are at stake! Did you know that you don’t have to pay a deposit when you book hotels if your credits are high enough? My friend just told me about it. I hope one day I can reach that level.”

“I know that I have a social credit score but I never really thought about it or checked it myself. Honestly, on a personal level, I never really cared about it. However, as for our society, I think it’s a wise way to avoid financial and social issues. With the rapid development of technology and easy access to information, credibility becomes increasingly crucial. In this new era, the system is quite efficient. And I guess it’s an acceptable way of measuring our social credibility. As for those who can’t book or purchase flights and train rides, I think there are reasons why they can’t. They must’ve crossed the limit and to some extent, they might deserve that. But of course, I hope everyone scores high on this system, because I bet not being able to travel freely must feel suffocating.”

When George Orwell wrote his '1984' novel, we thought it would be a sneak preview of some ang moh country in the future.

It's actually Communist China.

This is great, but will only work in China. If in the US lawyers will be lining up to take up these cases.

They need to block at least 1.2 BILLION chinks from leaving the country in order for the system to make any noticeable difference abroad.
