SINGAPORE : Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam has said Singaporeans are capable of deciding for themselves what the real issues are in the coming General Election and not be distracted by Internet chatter.

He said this when asked if the Internet comments on some candidates could detract from the real concerns of the country.

He was speaking to reporters after the official opening of a park in Nee Soon South on Sunday.

The Internet has been abuzz with comments related to the upcoming General Election.

But Mr Shanmugam believes the cyber talk will not divert Singaporeans' attention from important concerns.

He said: "It is up to us to set out what the issues are and for people to decide whether or not we are being honest in saying what the issues are and what is important for them.

"People are capable of deciding for themselves what the serious issues are and the serious issues today relate to the global situation, the international economic situation, the political situation, our own situation...and people's jobs, their houses, their welfare, their children's welfare. People know that."

Speaking to the media earlier, Mr Shanmugam said Singaporeans need to distinguish between facts and pure speculation when it comes to comments on the Internet.

And when it comes to politics, he points out that the ultimate aim is to create a better future for Singapore. He said that therefore, the key questions Singaporeans should ask are who can do the best job and what are the policies.

Mr Shanmugam believes that Singaporeans will be reasonable in their thinking and judgement.

Earlier, Mr Shanmugam and his People's Action Party (PAP) team had welcomed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who opened a park in Nee Soon South.

Mr Lee toured the facility and even participated in some of the activities.

When opening the park, located at Yishun Street 81, Mr Lee said: "We can build an active park. But whether it is active or not depends on whether the residents use it, whether you enjoy the facilities, whether you mingle with your friends at the active park, whether you do the exercises and find it something worthwhile."

And although a large part of Nee Soon South has been carved out from Ang Mo Kio GRC to form Nee Soon GRC, Mr Lee assured residents they will not be forgotten.

He said: "Whether this is in Nee Soon GRC or whether this is in Ang Mo Kio GRC, we are still neighbours and friends, and I expect to continue to visit you and continue to keep in touch with what is happening here, not just here in Nee Soon South but the whole of Nee Soon GRC, to know what is happening and how we can work together and share the facilities, share Singapore and make this our better home for all of us."

Mr Shanmugam will helm the PAP team in Nee Soon GRC.

The PAP team will likely include current Ang Mo Kio GRC MP, Lee Bee Wah; Sembawang GRC MP, Lim Wee Kiak; Marine Parade GRC MP, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim; and new comer, Patrick Tay.
