KUALA TERENGGANU: Three Mat Rempit were killed, with one decapitated, when they collided into each other during a race at an uncompleted stretch along the second phase of the East Coast (LPT) highway project near Kampung Bukit Guntong in Tepoh, here. The trio were performing stunts and lying flat on their machines while travelling at a speed of 100km per hour at about 7pm on Wednesday when the fatal collision occurred.
One of the victims was decapitated and his left hand severed due to the violent impact. It is learnt that the three were part of an infamous illegal motorcycle racing gang called the Owl Town Club that actively organised such races during weekends and public holidays here.
State Public Order and Traffic Chief Superintendent Alias Hashim said that one of the victims was killed on the spot while the other two succumbed to their injuries on the way to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah hospital here. He identified the victims as 16-year-old fourth former Solihhuemi Harun from Kampung Hulu Jeram, Mohd Abdul Rahman Jusoh, 20, from Kampung Raja, and Mohd Firdaus Nawi, also 20, from Kampung Sungai Ikan, all in Tepoh.
Supt Alias said the three were among hundreds of motorcyclists who had converged at the unfinished stretch for the race and had trespassed into a construction site. They were in a group of 10 to 12 motorcyclists who were racing at the time of the collision. The trio were on a modified Yamaha RXZ and two Honda C70 motorcycles. One of the machines was reported stolen.
Supt Alias said all three as well as the other racers were not wearing crash helmets when the collision occurred. Preliminary investigations revealed that the three were racing at extremely high speeds and were tailing each other closely. This resulted in them sustaining severe injuries, he said, adding that police were trying to identify the organiser and other individuals who were involved in the race that day.
