Three arrested for loansharking activities

Posted: 13 April 2012 2015 hrs

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested two men and one woman, for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

A statement from the police said that officers from Central Police Division were conducting anti-loanshark patrols along Towner Road on Thursday when they observed a man behaving suspiciously at an ATM.

The officers performed a check on the 48-year-old man and found several loanshark-related paraphernalia such as bank cards, mobile phones and a notebook containing loanshark entries.

The suspect led the officers to his taxi parked nearby where seven cartons of pamphlets advertising for "easy loans" were found.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had assisted the loansharks in their businesses by carrying out monetary transfers through ATM and distributing the pamphlets in Singapore.

Following his arrest, the officers mounted another operation whereby a 37-year-old man was arrested at St George's Road and a 47-year-old woman was arrested at Ang Mo Kio. These two suspects are believed to be assisting the first suspect in distributing the "easy loans" pamphlets around Singapore.

The first suspect will be charged in court on Saturday.
