Wells Fargo sacks India executive for urinating on plane passenger

US banking giant Wells Fargo on Friday sacked a top Indian executive now being pursued by police for allegedly urinating on a fellow passenger aboard an Air India flight.
Shankar Mishra, who local media reports said was the vice president of the bank's India operations, was terminated after a 72-year-old woman wrote to Air India's management to complain about the November incident.
"Wells Fargo holds employees to the highest standards of professional and personal behavior and we find these allegations deeply disturbing," the company said in a statement.

"This individual has been terminated from Wells Fargo," it added, without naming Mishra or specifying his position.
The bank said they were "cooperating with law enforcement and ask that any additional inquiries be directed to them".
Mishra, who was reportedly drunk during the journey from New York to New Delhi on November 26, has been on the run from authorities after the airline lodged a criminal complaint.
Police in Delhi said the accused was still at large and that they had been in contact with his family.
But in a statement released by his lawyers and reported by local media, Mishra said that he had already settled the matter by compensating the woman at the time of the incident.
"The WhatsApp messages between the accused and the lady clearly show that the accused had got the clothes and bags cleaned on November 28 and the same were delivered on November 30," the statement read, according to India Today.
Air India, recently bought by the sprawling conglomerate Tata Group after decades under state control, has faced a torrent of criticism for its handling of the woman's complaint.
India's aviation regulator has admonished Air India's management for not reporting the incident.
"The conduct of the concerned airline appears to be unprofessional and has led to a systemic failure," the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a statement.

As the Indian aviation landscape gets busier with the entry of new airlines and the rejuvenation of old ones, the recently-privatised Air India is ready to take on competition with a shining new arsenal. The Tata Group is expected to soon close a deal with Boeing Co. to buy as many as 150 737 Max aircraft, reported Economic Times. The deal will be the first major buy of the Maharaja-besotted airline after moving to camp Tata.
The order is also the biggest yet for the American aircraft manufacturer since the sale of 75 aircraft to Akasa Air in 2021. Air India is likely to take the delivery of 50 737 MAX aircraft initially, with an option to pick up as many as 150 later, the report added.

Air India favoured the American plane maker for the massive order as it promised to deliver 50 aircraft by March 2023. The planes were initially meant to be delivered to China Southern, which had placed an order and was supposed to take immediate delivery of 103 aircraft. However, the Chinese regulator did not clear the deal in the aftermath of two 737 MAX crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which led to grounding of the model by aviation regulators worldwide. The Boeing model was cleared for take-off on November 18, 2020, after an investigation by US FAA.

Expansion mode: Air India to lease 36 new planes, almost 30 of its grounded aircraft to fly again soon

Expansion mode: Air India to lease 36 new planes, almost 30 of its grounded aircraft to fly again soon

NEW DELHI: Under founder Tata Group, Air India has begun expanding its wings aggressively now. The airline on Monday announced it will lease six wide body Boeing 777-300 extended range (ER) version.
These six aircraft, that will join by mid next year, are in addition to the 30 aircraft lease announced earlier — 25 A320 family and five B777-200 long range — and will be used to add both domestic and international flights.
In a first for AI or any Indian carrier, these six B777-300ER will have a four class configuration — first, business, premium economy and economy, and will connect Indian metro cities with international destinations.
This means an addition of 36 aircraft — 11 B777s and 25 A320 family — by early next year with vastly improved cabin interiors, as opposed to the poor passenger experience on Air India’s existing fleet that has suffered due to lack on investment on upkeep or maintenance during its past penurious few years as a government-owned airline.

AI is looking at leasing more aircraft as an interim measure till its places it “historic” order for planes and then the same start joining the fleet. The earlier decision to lease 30 aircraft include 21 Airbus A320s, four Airbus A321 and five B777-200LR.
Since the Tatas took over AI earlier this year, 19 long-grounded aircraft have returned to the skies with nine more to follow.
The Maharaja has raised the frequency of flights between key cities on the domestic sector and has also announced direct flights between Indian cities and key global destinations like Doha, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Birmingham. It is going to commence direct flights from Delhi to key European cities like Milan, Vienna and Copenhagen, and from Mumbai to New York, Paris and Frankfurt.
AI CMD Campbell Wilson said: “Growing our network is an essential part of Air India’s Vihaan.AI transformational journey and we remain committed to increasing connectivity and frequency of flights both domestically and internationally. These additional aircraft leases will support our near term growth even as we finalise plans to refresh and significantly grow our long-term fleet."

Explained: How Air India plans to spread its wing with a massive order of 500 jets

As Tata Group looks to revive Air India, it is reportedly close to placing orders for 500 planes from Airbus and Boeing. PTI

Air India is all set to reach new heights. It is eyeing a huge order of 500 aircraft that will cost tens of billions of dollars.
The new planes will be reportedly bought from the European multinational Airbus and the American aerospace giant Boeing. The mega purchase is part of the move to revive Air India, which was acquired by the Tata Group in January.

According to the news agency Reuters, which was the first to report the story, the Air India order comprises “400 narrow-body jets and 100 or more wide-bodies including Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s and 777”.

The deal could top $100 billion at list prices, including any options, and rank among the biggest by a single airline in volume terms. It is expected to be bigger than the order for 460 Airbus and Boeing jets from American Airlines more than a decade ago, Reuters reports.
Another report in The Economic Times said that Air India was looking to buy around 150 737 Max planes from Boeing.

While reports in the media throw light on Air India’s big plan, both Airbus and Boeing have not made any comments. There has been no response from the Tata Group as well.

Air India spreading its wings

The news of the massive order comes less than a fortnight after the merger of Air India and Vistara. The joint venture with Singapore Airlines will lead to the creation of India’s second-biggest carrier.

With the merger, Tata got a fleet of 218 aircraft, making Air India the country’s largest international airline. In the domestic market, it comes second to IndiGo.
If the new order goes through, Air India will receive 500 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing over a decade.
The two deals are an indication of Tata Group’s big plans for the future – to increase flights to and from India and take on foreign carriers like Emirates. With a larger fleet, Air India can in the future compete with IndiGo in the domestic market and even look to increase its regional international traffic, according to a report in The Indian Express.
India’s air travel market is fast-growing and Air India’s expansion plans will contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of expanding the economy to $5 trillion, reports Reuters.

A possible turbulence

According to experts, Air India’s road to recovery will be a long one with trouble along the way. Poor domestic infrastructure and a shortage of pilots will come as a hurdle, they told Reuters. The competition from established Gulf and other carriers will be persistent.
Airbus A321neos for the Air India-Vistara merger may not come by easily. The planes are sold out until at least 2028, the report said.
The Tata-Air India story
JRD Tata founded India’s first airline in 1932. It was known as Tata Airlines until 1946 and was then converted into a public entity and renamed Air India. This is when its mascot, the Maharaja was launched.
Air India is nationalised in 1953 and is divided into domestic and international carriers.
After years of losses, in April 2012, India approves a $5.8 billion bailout for Air India, which was to be received by 2020. Years later in March 2018, the government plans to sell a controlling stake along with $5.1 billion of the carrier’s debt, reports Reuters.
After no interest from bidders to buy 76 per cent stake, the government. decides to sell 100 per cent of the state. There are two bidders Tata Sons and Ajay Singh, the promoter of budget airline SpiceJet.
In October 2021, the government announces Tata Sons as the winning bidder for its 100 per cent stake in Air India after the conglomerate bid Rs 180 billion. In January, this year Tata regained control of the carrier.
