IPOH - Robbers swept a goldsmith shop here clean of its jewellery after drilling a hole in the shop's wall and then boring a hole through a safe containing the valuables.
Sungai Siput OCPD Supt Azman Salim said the robbery was discovered by the Jalan Besar shop owner at about 9am when he was about to open for business.
"The robbers drilled the hole into the goldsmith shop from an empty shophouse.
"After entering the shop, they switched off the alarm and drilled a hole through the top of the safe," he told reporters here yesterday.
Supt Azman said the robbers took all of the jewellery in the shop, including those in the safe and on display.
"We have yet to determine the losses suffered by the owner," he said.
The robbery, Supt Azman said, could have occurred between Saturday and Monday.
He said the shop was closed on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday.
"The case will be investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code," he said, adding that no suspects have been caught.
Last month, thieves tunnelled through four shops and broke into a goldsmith's steel vault in Plaza Melaka Sentral, carting away RM350,000 (S$140,000) worth of jewellery. Police said the gang used an oxy-acetylene torch to cut through the vault, leaving a hole the size of a football ball. They also removed the shop's CCTV.
In April, three foreigners stole over RM400,000 from a supermarket's safe box in Manjung by drilling into it. The suspects were believed to have entered the supermarket through the roof of a hotel.
