IN AN ongoing effort to ensure safe travel, Changi Airport recently tested a machine that can detect traces of explosives on passengers. During the trial, which was conducted at Terminal 1 last month, passengers selected at random were asked to walk through the machine, called the IonScan Sentinel II, which uses jets of air to dislodge particles and vapours on a person's body or clothes. A scanner which can detect more than 40 types of explosives then takes just a few seconds to analyse the samples collected.
