Dear Leona,
A friend of mine runs a cleaning agency and just like your Printer friend at Bras Basah, he charges expat Indians Premium price because of the same reasons- nasty, demanding, unreasonable costing the company more than the average normal customers would.
By the way, the owner of the Singaporean company is a local Indian but only adopted this policy of charging Expat Indian premium price because of too many very bad experiences with highyly demanding and unreasonable expat Indians who constantly demands discount upon citing the slightest dissatisfaction after the completion of service.
Many a time, even the local cleaners with years of experience dealing with western expats, got into tongue lashing with expat Indians because of their rude regard for cleaners; probably these expats view cleaners as low paid workers who do not have to be shown any respect. This is not the treatment the cleaners experience from expats of other nationality but seems to be very common among expat Indians especially the north Indians. Many a worker complained that the expat Indian clients speaks in a condescending manner to them and regard them lowly which is not what they experience with most western expats.
According to my friend, many of his cleaners request not to be sent to expat Indian houses because of the same reasons of bad treatment. Not just the chinese and malay cleaners, even his Indian cleaners refuses to take on jobs if its expat Indians. This creates a problem for him, some even when offered extra pay refuses.
While its true bitchiness transcends all ethnicity, somehow among expat Indians it is too often and too much. Looks like the coMmunity through their own behaviour has brought this upon themeselves. May be it is time for them to relook aT how they conduct themselves as after all they are the ambassadors of their country when they are overseas. And it is they who stand to lose if they do not do some soul searching, when so many locals have spoken strongly about their behavior.
I personally think they should regard this feedback and make some effort to change. I don’t think Singaporeans are rejecting them but just rejecting their behavior.
Singaporeans do welcome expat Indians, if the behavior they display is worth welcoming.
