From what I am reading, the fatality rate for Covid is something like 1.4% depending on the jurisdiction and country, and its high, higher then say seasonal flu which is at around 0.22%. The death rate is of course skewed towards the elderly and those with underlying ailments. We know all this. But where the health authorities around the world have not done is to communicate the consequences of Covid Infection. Everyone just wants to talk about the deaths.
According to some countries like Canada, the hospitalization rate is 7% for those infected with Covid. So, if 100,000 people are infected with Covid, on average 7,000 need a hospital bed. Of this 7,000 requiring hospitalization, about 2100 will require ICU/CCU. This is where the issue is. ICU/CCU beds in any country is a short commodity. If you are putting Covid patients into ICU/CCU units, then you have to in effect quarantine them, so it does not spread to other patients. Which means that other surgeries cannot take place because there is simply no beds available for post-op recovery. If you need a hip, knee, replacement, cancer surgery or some other surgery, well, those will be canceled until there is CCU beds available. This of course has a cascading effect. Some People whose surgeries were postponed due to lack of beds, will die waiting, Others will suffer as their conditions get worse. People who say Covid is not that bad ignore this fact. It is bad not from a direct impact point of view, but from its indirect impact on the ability for hospitals to deliver other healthcare services.
