Pledge: David Cameron has said that the Tories want to give the country's children 'the best'
David Cameron will today pledge to raise standards in schools by turning teaching into a 'noble profession'.
The Tory leader said a government he led would be 'brazenly elitist' when it came to picking the best teachers.
Graduates would no longer be able to enter the profession without a high standard degree qualification.
In a speech to Walworth Academy in London, Mr Cameron will point to research which shows students taught by the best teachers can make four times more progress.
Mr Cameron will say: 'We don't reach out for the very best talent. If we want to give our children the best - it's time we made our teaching the best.
'We want to make it the noble profession - the career path that attracts the best brains, is well rewarded and commands the most respect.'
The Tory leader will also announce plans to launch a 'Teach Now' scheme which will enable professionals to apply to work for schools under a fast-track system.
'It will be a one-stop-shop for people who want to transfer into teaching,' Mr Cameron will say.
'Only the best professionals with the best qualifications need apply.
