Several Dead In Tour Bus Crash
8:54am UK, Saturday January 31, 2009
At least seven people have been killed and 10 injured in a tour bus crash near the Hoover Dam in Arizona.
The crash closed Highway 93 in both directions
The state's department of public safety (DPS) said the crash happened at 4pm local time on Friday.
The crash closed highway US 93 in both directions. The road is the main route between Phoenix and Las Vegas.
Commander Dean Nyhart, of the Arizona DPS, said six deaths were confirmed at the scene, about 190 miles northwest of Phoenix; a seventh person died at a Las Vegas hospital.
Nyhart said investigators were struggling to identify the injured and were not certain how many people were on the 24-passenger bus or how many had been transported to hospitals in Kingman and Las Vegas.
The bus was traveling north when it veered left and then right across the median, Nyhart said. It rolled at least once before stopping.
Commander Nyhart said many of the victims killed at the scene had been ejected from the bus.
All of the dead were Chinese nationals on an organised tour.
The group had left Las Vegas early on Friday for a trip to the Grand Canyon and were returning when the accident happened.
