According to new numbers, things for The Little Mermaid remake look less than optimal.

Disney fans are gearing up for the Studio’s latest release: the live-action adaptation of its classic animated film The Little Mermaid. The film, which features newcomer Halle Bailey as the titular mermaid princess, has been generating a lot of buzz ahead of its release this Memorial Day weekend. Unfortunately, experts predict that The Little Mermaid is poised to only make a medium-sized splash at the box office.

Live-action remakes of classic Disney animated films have generally been hit or miss in recent years. The success of live-action films like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast has been countered by flops like the recent Dumbo and Pinnochio remake. Many fans feel burned out with all of the remakes coming out every year.

There has been a lot of buzz around the casting of the movie, which includes Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric. Additionally, interest in the film has been high among fans thanks to its crew, which includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, who helped write new songs for the film, and composer Alan Menken, who worked on the music for the original animated film.

BoxOffice Pro is predicting that The Little Mermaid will earn between $30 and $50 million in its opening weekend. This is not quite on par with the success Disney has had in the past. For a film of this size and budget, these numbers are just okay. Not a flop by any means, but certainly not the smash-hit numbers Disney was hoping for.
Despite these numbers, many fans are still eagerly anticipating the release of The Little Mermaid. The Walt Disney Company is hoping that the film will draw larger crowds once the release date draws nearer. Disney is also hoping that it will help attract more subscribers to its streaming service Disney+, which will show the film a few months after its theatrical release.
Whether The Little Mermaid will ultimately join the ranks of Disney’s highest-grossing films remains to be seen. Much will be revealed as the premier on May 26, 2023, grows nearer.
