Jailed for fatal accident
By Elena Chong

A FORMER SMRT bus driver who caused the deaths of two people and injured two others in a lorry along an expressway was jailed for 10 months and banned from driving for eight years on Wednesday. Tay Siang Ching, 30, a Malaysian, pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of Madam Tan Chui Hoon, 58, and Mr Michael Motcharaj, 33, by doing a rash act along Tampines Expressway on July 9 last year. He was adjusting the right wing mirror of the bus which resulted in the bus veering left from the left lane into the road shoulder and hitting a stationary lorry. He also admitted to grievously hurting lorry driver Toh Kee Heng, 55. A third charge of causing hurt to Mr Halim Kerim, 29, was taken into consideration.

The court heard that Tay was driving towards Changi Airport when he saw the lorry with its hazard lights on at the road shoulder about 50m away. The lorry driver had stopped the vehicle there for his workers to rearrange the dried palm leaves loaded at the back. While driving, Tay stretched out his right hand to adjust the mirror, and occasionally looked right to check on the alignment, which affected his focus on the road. The collision threw Mr Halim off from the rear cabin and flung over the left guard railing where he landed in a drain. The impact pushed the lorry forward into the centre lane, with its front against the flow of traffic. All four were injured and taken to hospital where Mr Motcharaj died less than an hour later. Madam Tan died shortly from a traumatic rupture of the heart. Both the lorry driver and the other injured were warded for three days. Tay could have been jailed for up to five years and fined for causing death by doing a rash act. The other other offence is punishable with up to four years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

SHE loved them so much that she was even willing to lay her life down for the girls. On Saturday night, Indonesian maid Puji Astutik died proving her love - and saved her boss' one-year-old.

Ms Puji, 28, was crossing the road with her employer, Mrs Lam's younger daughter, when an SMRT bus ran into her at the junction of Choa Chu Kang Street 52 and Choa Chu Kang North 6.

She flung the baby girl forward but was pinned under the wheels, The New Paper and Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao reported.

According to The New Paper, Miss Puji's agent, Mr Eric Lim, said he plans to raise $10,000 for the maid's family and intends to hand the money to the Indonesian embassy to pass it to them.

I still do not understand why bus companies prefer recruiting FT drivers esp from PRC. If you have been to China and seen their driving habits, you will know they will not fit into Singapore transport system. Most of them beat red lights, speed and are rude. Although things are improving in China, i still believed that old habits die hard and they will bring it with them to Singapore on the road.

they are cheap and willing

if she flung baby, wont the fall kill the baby too? boy that is a ugly baby.

If you belong to a certain class, only 1 day's jail; some were even acquitted, because the shadows from the roadside tree were responsible.

Some police personnel protested . But the magistrate says the time detained at the police station during the questioning was already part of the day . So the accused just spend 14 hours in jail since the rest in meal times and administrative .

One of their regular driving habits include "making" pedestrian crossings sure-die deathtraps for pedestrians who use them.

This is the act of a very very kind person, and a heroine, may her kind soul rest in peace and her next life a better rebirth.

This one is heart wrenching .

Daredevil NTU shuttle bus drivers from China endanger lives on campus

Something needs to be done about the reckless China drivers of the NTU shuttle buses, says a STOMPer, who was travelling on board a bus which knocked an elderly lady off her bicycle yesterday morning (Jan 18).

This is not the first time the STOMPer has witnessed reckless driving on board the bus.

Sometimes, the drivers drive while talking over the phone and beat traffic lights as well, he says.

Such behaviour needs to be stopped, says the sender, who believes that most of the drivers are foreigners and weren’t trained according to Singapore’s rules and traffic conditions

The STOMPer says in an email dated January 18:

“I feel that I have the moral responsibility to highlight the issue of how reckless Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) shuttle bus drivers are.

“Many of them are from China and have perhaps brought their reckless driving habits to Singapore.

“I have personally seen how drivers behave in China and feel that they are in fact one of the worst drivers in the world.

“I was on board the NTU shuttle bus from Pioneer MRT to NTU today at about 9:45am.

“As it was entering NTU (from Pioneer Road North into Nanyang Drive), it knocked down an old lady who was cycling on the left side of the bus.

“As a result, the old lady fell off her bicycle and suffered some bruises to her arm.

“She looked to be in a state of shock and it deeply saddened me to see her sitting on the kerb, groaning in pain.

“I take the NTU shuttle bus almost daily and have witnessed much reckless behaviour including beating of traffic lights, using the handphone while driving on campus, failing to give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings amongst other dangerous acts.

“I seriously hope the relevant parties such as NTU, Tong Tar Transport (shuttle bus operator engaged by NTU), or even the Traffic Police can look into the matter and deal with these extremely reckless drivers.

“Please do something before someone is seriously injured or even killed due to their recklessness.

“I believe daily commuters on the NTU shuttle bus will agree with me on this.”

Bus knocks down cyclist at Circuit Road

bus_knocks_down_cyclist_at_circuit_road-thumbnail

STOMPer Criteria was at the Circuit Road area when he witnessed an accident where a bus knocked down a cyclist and his passenger at 7:05am today (Jan 23).

In an MMS which the 23-year-old engineer sent to STOMP, the STOMP recounted:

"I was at the bus stop at Block 74A Circuit Road market when a bus accidentally hit an elderly cyclist and his wife who happened to be his passenger on the bicycle with him.

"The elderly man escaped unhurt but his wife suffered from minor scratches and his bicycle was scratched.

"Some of the Chinese New Year stuff that were in the basket in front of the bicycle fell off and I felt quite sad to see this happen.

"I don't know who was in the wrong but everyone should have been extra careful on the road.

"The elderly man had a short argument with the bus driver when he stopped the bus and came down.

"I did not see what happened after that because I had to leave but I hope everything was settled."

bus_incident__eunos_link_2hh-data.jpg

This bus was travelling along Eunos Link when it crashed into a bus stop, says a STOMPer who was near the scene of the accident when it happened.

Two different STOMPers took these pictures showing how badly damaged the bus and the bus stop were after the accident.

Another accident between a car and a taxi also occurred at a T-junction nearby around the same time.

It is unclear if the two accidents were related or if anybody was injured.

The STOMPer says:

"A bus rammed into a bus stop at Eunos Link, damaging both the bus and bus stop.

"Another accident happened at the T-junction."

STOMPer sky, who was passing by at the time, adds:

"There was accident at the cross junction between a taxi and a car.

"Later, I passed by this bus stop and saw this bus that hit the lamp post follow by the bus stop."

In an email to STOMP(April 17), a SCDF spokesperson said:

"SCDF was alerted to an incident involving a bus which collided into a bus stop along Eunos link on 17 Apr 2010 at 1232 hrs.

"1 fire engine and 6 ambulances were deployed to the incident site.

"Upon arrival, SCDF rescuers and paramedics swiftly attended to 21 casualties at the site. No one was trapped.

"15 adults and 6 children were conveyed by SCDF to the Changi General Hospital and KK Children’s Hospital respectively for follow-up medical
attention.

"1 of the adult victims sustained head injury. The other victims suffered injuries such as cuts and bruises."
