HMPV virus in China FAQs: Symptoms, treatment and everything else you should know
m.economictimes.com
China is currently facing an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and videos on social media purportedly show congested hospitals and overburdened healthcare systems. Health experts have raised concerns over HMPV, a respiratory virus in other parts of the region afflicting a number of Asian countries.
"Recent cases detected include pathogens such as the rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus, with cases of the human metapneumovirus among people under the age of 14 showing an upward trend, especially in northern provinces," as per a report published in Reuters.
Although reports and social media posts describe a crisis, Chinese authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) have not declared a state of emergency yet. The surge in infections is being examined, especially since it coincides with the winter season, a time when respiratory illnesses typically peak. As per the reports, the HMPV is spreading rapidly along with multiple viruses like influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Covid-19.
