That's the situation some nightspots in Beijing are facing since the police began cracking down on vice activities on April 11. The campaign resulted in the shutdown of 35 entertainment outlets, including Heaven Earth nightclub, No 8 Club KTV, and Sunworld Dynasty Hotel KTV, which allegedly provided obscene shows and were believed to be fronts for prostitution.

On April 29, police also raided Wangshihaomen Club after plainclothes officers had visited the club while undercover the previous week. The police detained 26 suspects in the massage rooms, and seized sex drugs and account books that recorded the transactions. With "zero tolerance" as their campaign's motto, Beijing police also arrested members of 149 prostitution gangs and closed 256 hair salons that were fronts for vice activities.

In all, Beijing police have arrested 1,100 people suspected of facilitating prostitution, reported China Daily. Other nightclubs have since got cold feet and have asked their hostesses to return to their hometowns in the provinces. As many as 100,000 women have been "chased out of Beijing", reported Beijing Wanbao on May 16. Quoting the boss of one record company who took a client to a nightclub, the newspaper reported that he was surprised to see no hostesses there.

The mamasan explained: "The authorities are coming down hard on us so the girls have all returned to their hometowns." Eventually, the mamasan found a girl to entertain the record company boss, but the girl was visibly uneasy and refused to put on the black dress that the nightclub's hostesses usually wore as a uniform. Mr He Angang, the political commissioner of Beijing's security forces, said: "Usually, these entertainment places are run by gangs. Carrying out the raids will help reduce crimes. "He said that the 35 nightclubs that were closed were in Chaoyang, Haidian and Daxing districts.

Suspended

The police cancelled the business licenses of six bath centres in Daxing district, and the other 24 entertainment places involved were ordered to suspend their business. One such nightclub manager, identified as Ma, allegedly told police that customers paid at least 20,000 yuan (S$4,000) for membership. He said: "These clients will be eligible for the special services whereas ordinary customers can only have massages."

He added that masseuses wore white uniforms and the prostitutes usually wore red or black dresses. Mr He said police intend to consolidate the campaign and plainclothes officers will continue paying undercover visits to Beijing's nightclubs, paying special attention to the owners and managers. Police will also look into prostitution in rented houses and take action against errant owners.

Four night clubs suspended for using hostesses

Police in Beijing's Chaoyang district on Tuesday discovered 557 hostesses providing paid services, which is against the law, in four luxury night clubs, and suspended the clubs' business for six months, the Beijing Times reported Thursday.
Police said the four night clubs – Tianshang Renjian, Mingmen Yeyan, Huadu and Kaifu International – not only had hostesses providing paid services, but also had fire prevention lapses. The newspaper cited a police officer as saying six months of business suspension are the "severest penalty for providing paid hostesses services."

"These entertainment places are usually backed by criminal forces and gangs. Carrying out the clean-up is also conducive to reducing crimes," explained He Angang, the political commissioner from the city's security corps. He said the 35 entertainment places involved were spread throughout the city: seven in Chaoyang, seven in Haidian district and six in Daxing district.

The police cancelled the business licenses of the six bath centers in Daxing district, and the other 24 entertainment places involved were ordered to suspend their business. He said they intend to intensify the campaign and plainclothes police officers will continue paying irregular undercover visits to the city's entertainment places and they will pay special attention to owners and managers of such venues.

Moreover, they will also investigate prostitution in rented houses and make the owners of any houses found to be providing prostitution accountable.
