SINGAPORE: The average person may not give much thought to a common item like a thumb-drive, and if asked on where or who invented it, they may draw a blank.

It is a Singapore invention that demonstrates what local engineers can achieve, said Economic Development Board chairman Lim Siong Guan.

Mr Lim made the observation when speaking to his audience at the Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES) Charles Rudd Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, where he was conferred the IES Honorary Fellowship.

In his message to young Singaporeans, Mr Lim encouraged them that they have the ability to create things. They should also not let others shout them down and be frightened into not even trying.

Mr Lim said an engineering degree is a “smart choice” for undecided undergraduates, as those with an engineering degree will be able to switch to other majors easily. This is unlike undergraduates in other disciplines who will find it hard to switch to engineering.

As for engineering's future contribution to Singapore, Mr Lim said it is a future that needs people such as engineers with curiosity, imagination, conviction, competence, clarity, courage and passion.

He said it was because of these attributes that Singapore has a Jurong Industrial Park, the Singapore Armed Forces, and Jurong Island.

Thumb drive is the best creation of this decade. Killing all previous invention for data storage. How much does't the Singapore inventor profit from the thumb drive. I think less than US$50m very stupid. It patent have a value at least US$1billion. There are more than billion of thumb drive have being sold on the market until now. Most own few and some even more than 10pcs becuase regular upgrade buy bigger memory.
