Singapore, June 1, 2009 -You won’t be lulled by the hypnotic effects of coconut trees swaying in the breeze or rhythmic pounding of waves against the shore, but your pulse will surely slow a little when you dine at Ubin First Stop Restaurant (Changi).

That’s because this place in Changi Village is imbued with a laidback charm reminiscent of the good old kampung days. The wooden building housing the restaurant was formerly a Customs office.
It stands on stilts, and has a sprawling alfresco dining area, an outdoor kitchen and flights of stairs leading to a huge air-conditioned dining hall. If you are thinking of throwing a “Good Old Days” theme party, this would be the perfect venue for it!

On the menu are typical seafood restaurant offerings. But what’s unusual is that some of the fish served here is caught from the waters around Pulau Ubin. And since owner Allaan Tan also operates an eatery on the island itself, you can be sure he knows where to find the freshest hauls!

The freshness of the rabbit fish (top, pei tor hee) is proof of this. Simply steamed in a flavourful gravy, and generously garnished with spring onion and parsley, the fish is so tender and delectable you can easily demolish a whole piece within seconds!

Diners can take their pick of other seafood from the live displays, from leather jackets (this is a species of fish, not fashion apparel!) to Sri Lankan crabs (below), and bamboo clams (above) imported from Scotland.
