Killing women and children is justified in a hadith in which Muhammad waves away those who object. “It is reported on the authority of Sa’b b. Jaththama that the Prophet of Allah (may peace be upon him), when asked about the women and children of the polytheists being killed during the night raid, said: They are from them.” (Sahih Muslim 4321)
But then there is this: “During some of the Ghazawat of the Prophet a woman was found killed. Allah’s Messenger disapproved the killing of women and children.” (Sahih Bukhari 4.56.3014)
So did Muhammad authorize the killing of women and children, or did he forbid it?
This is just one of many such contradictions that can be found in the Hadith literature. They point to the fact that most or all of these traditions were not recording what Muhammad actually said and did, but were fabricated in order to give the weight of Muhammad’s authority to the views of a particular faction. Then the other faction would invent a competing story in which Muhammad said just the opposite.
