'Losing one's only child is a loss no mother should ever have to experience. I could not have coped without the support from his SAF unit.'
MY SON, full-time national serviceman Fernando Brian Nicholas of 48 SAR, died in an accident last week. He was returning home after work on his motorcycle with a pillion passenger when it was involved in a collision with a car. I was shocked and devastated. Shortly after the accident, I was greeted by Brian's officers from 48 SAR: commanding officer Lieutenant-Colonel Ng Chia Yong, Captain Lai Fei Meng, Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Roger Koh Chye Hin and a few other men.
They made the funeral arrangements and liaised with the hospital, police and my family members and friends.
Throughout my period of grief, RSM Koh was ever helpful, asking after my well-being and ensuring that the necessary arrangements were made.
My son was posted to 48 SAR barely two weeks ago. His officers hardly knew him and yet their commitment to ensuring the proper arrangements for my son's wake and funeral, and to my well-being, was unswerving and unwavering. They gave me, a single mother, all the help I needed and asked for nothing in return. I cannot thank the officers and men of 48 SAR enough and words cannot express my gratitude. It may be a new unit, but in my book, 48 SAR's care, concern and comforting presence are well worth emulating by any Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) unit. I know it will always hold a special place in my heart.
I also thank my friends and colleagues, Brian's friends, especially Arthur, Stephanie, Gerald, Acap, Betty and Anthony, for their love and moral support.
Losing one's only child is a loss no mother should ever have to experience. I could not have coped without the support I received so generously and compassionately from his SAF unit.
