Elon Musk is being ridiculed online for his highly-publicized attempts to help rescue the trapped Thai boys in a music-playing mini-submarine – which local authorities deemed “impractical.”
Thai Navy SEALs have just completed the monumental three-day rescue mission to guide 12 boys and their 25-year-old coach to safety from deep inside a water-filled, winding cave. However, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk appears to be getting a chunk of the praise for the rescue mission – without actually contributing to the efforts.

Musk and his SpaceX engineers began construction plans for a “tiny, kid-size submarine” soon after the stranded group were discovered by British divers on Monday last week.

The billionaire kept the internet constantly updated on the submarine’s progress, posting videos from its testing site at a California high school and sharing his feedback from Thai authorities.

Unfortunately for Musk, the mini-sub wasn’t going to work for several reasons. One, water levels were rising, the group were running out of oxygen and so the rescue mission didn’t have time to wait for the submarine. Secondly, maneuvering a cylinder through the cave’s narrow twists and turns for hours on end, multiple times a day, didn’t appear to be the most economical use of time and fading energy.
Although his technology is good and sophisticated, it’s not practical for this mission,” said Narongsak Osatanakorn, chief of the command center overseeing the rescue, to reporters.

Despite the rescue mission already being successfully underway for two days, the CEO continued to post mini-sub updates, even revealing that his team were building a second, slightly smaller version. On Monday, Musk even travelled to Thailand to personally deliver the sub, knowing its window of opportunity for the rescue had passed but hoping it “might be useful in future.
Musk was mocked heavily, and at times flat-out berated, for pushing his seemingly-unwanted help on Thailand. Some deemed him to be “narcissistic” while others lavished him in praise for taking the time from his busy schedule.

As some of his supporters, and Musk himself, pointed out, narcissist or not, he’s an engineer who took some initiative and did more to try to help the rescue op than the vast majority of Earth’s population.

In an operation that gripped the entire world, all 12 boys and their football coach have been successfully rescued from a cave in Thailand after being trapped for more than two weeks.

Members of the ‘Wild Boars’ soccer team, who range in age from 12 to 16, and their coach became trapped after a rainy season downpour turned a cave adventure in the northern province of Chiang Rai into a nightmare, flooding the tunnels and making it impossible to leave.

Divers began a search operation on June 25, and the group was finally found – all alive – by British divers on July 2. The search operation quickly turned into a rescue mission involving 90 divers – 50 foreign and 40 Thai – though some warned it could take months. However, the first four boys were safely brought out of the cave on Sunday, tethered to rescue divers.

The incredible rescue has been deemed a miracle by many, but the operation wasn’t without tragedy. A former Thai Navy diver lost his life while on a re-supply mission inside the cave to support the rescue.

With the entire team and their coach outside of the cave, efforts are now focused on tending to their health. The eight boys brought out on Sunday and Monday are in good health overall, though two are suffering from pneumonia, according to hospital staff cited by AP.

“The kids are footballers so they have high immune systems,” Jedsada Chokdumrongsuk, permanent secretary at the Public Health Ministry, told a news conference. “Everyone is in high spirits and are happy to get out. But we will have a psychiatrist to evaluate them,” he said, while stressing that the boys are “happy and smiling.”

Some of the children rescued even had a typical kid’s request at the hospital after being trapped without food for so long – bread with chocolate spread. They were, of course, granted it.

The boys have so far only been allowed to see their parents through the glass of a quarantined room, due to the risk of infection. They will likely be kept in the hospital for a week to undergo tests, officials said on Tuesday.

Elon Musk’s big, failed plan to bring a mini-submarine to rescue the Thai boys
Musk tried to join the rescue efforts by building a sub. It wasn’t used, so he left it in the cave where the boys had been trapped.

When SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk continued tweeting about his sub even after the rescue mission was over, he got some pretty funny tweets in response.

The 12 Thai boys and their coach have been rescued from the cave in northern Thailand where they’d been stuck for over two weeks.

One weird thing is still there, though: Elon Musk’s “kid size” submarine.
It’s a bit of a strange story, so let’s back up. To help out the rescue mission, Musk’s engineers from SpaceX and Tesla had built and tested a mini-submarine for the boys to be carried out in, because they were not swimmers or divers.
But over the past few days, the boys learned to swim and managed to escape the cave with the help of professional divers, and the sub was never used. In tweets on Monday, the head of SpaceX and Tesla said he would leave the sub behind, as it “may be useful in the future.”
The pod was described by Musk as “a tiny, kid-size submarine... Light enough to be carried by 2 divers, small enough to get through narrow gaps. Extremely robust.” The idea behind it was to rescue the kids without them needing to swim or use air tanks.
“Although [Musk’s] technology is good and sophisticated, it’s not practical for this mission,” one of the rescue operation coordinators told the Guardian.

Glad to know they are all finally rescued. With only one casualty, hero Samarn Kunan RIP.

Israeli Tech a Key Factor in Rescue of Thai Kids
YERUSHALAYIM -
As the world has watched the drama in Thailand surrounding a group of children marooned in a flooded cave, it has emerged that an Israeli communications firm has been a key factor of the rescue effort. In an interview with Yisrael Hayom, Uzi Hanoni, CEO of Yavne-based Maxtech, said that when the youths went missing over a week ago, the government of Thailand placed an order for his company’s ad-hoc mesh network communications devices – and when he found out what they wanted them for, Hanoni donated the system to the rescue cause.

“Assaf, one of our people, is responsible for sales in Thailand,” said Hanoni. “We offer communications systems that create networks on the spot, designed for areas where there is no communications infrastructure. We gave them our devices and the rescue teams in the caves used them to communicate. That’s the Israeli contribution to this rescue effort.”

Too soon for the boys to travel to Moscow. They need to rest and restore their health. Anyway they can watch the Final on TV.

Thai cave rescue: Elon Musk hits out at mission chief who turned down mini-submarine offer

Elon Musk has questioned the role of the man who turned down his offer of a mini-submarine to help in the rescue of the trapped schoolboys from a flooded Thai cave.

Chiang Rai provincial Governor Narongsak Osatanakorn was at the heart of the successful mission to free 12 boys and their football coach after more than two weeks deep underground, but Mr Musk claimed it was inaccurate to describe him as the "rescue chief".

The Tesla boss also released an email exchange with one of the rescue mission's lead divers, showing the tech billionaire had been encouraged to continue work on the miniature submarine he hastily developed to aid the rescue of the boys.

Upon delivery of the submarine on Tuesday, Mr Osatanakorn told Mr Musk that it would not be suitable for the operation.

Mr Musk had tweeted video of test runs of the "tiny, kid-size submarine" that he said had been developed with "feedback from Thailand".

The final members of the team, aged 11 to 16, and their coach were removed from the cave on Tuesday and are now quarantined in hospital amid concerns for their health.

With some of the team still stranded on Tuesday, Mr Musk visited the Tham Luang cave to drop off the submarine.

But Mr Osatanakorn told him the device was not practical for the rescue mission.

Responding to a media report of the incident, Mr Musk said it was not accurate to describe Mr Osatanakorn as the rescue chief and that he was "not the subject matter expert".

He also tweeted part of an email conversation with British cave expert Richard Stanton, one of the divers who initially found the boys, in which Mr Stanton says "it is absolutely worth continuing with development of this system".

In the conversation, Mr Stanton also reveals "we're worried about the smallest lad" in the group.

"It is absolutely worth continuing with development of this system in as timely a manner as feasible. If the rain holds out it may well be used," Mr Stanton wrote.

Mr Musk told Mr Stanton the submarine was being designed by "one of the world's best engineering teams who normally design spaceships and spacesuits".

"[The] operating principal is the same as spacecraft design — no loss of life even with two failures," he wrote.

When spruiking his submarine on Monday, Mr Musk said the design had four "handles/hitch points" on both the front and back of the device, adding: "Two air tank connections on front and two on rear, allowing one to four tanks simultaneously connected, all recessed for impact protection [with] secondary cap seal if leak develops."

It also has "segmented compartments to place rocks or dive weights [and] adjust buoyancy".
