PAD to resume street protests if gov't pushes for charter rewrite

The core leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy have threatened to resume street protest by the yellow shirts if the government proceeds to amend the charter.

"We rallied two times for 33 days and 193 days totalling 226 days to oppose charter amendments and oust two puppet governments and now the present government has the idea of amending the charter," Chamlong said.

Responding to Somsak's question on reviving street protests, the crowds gave a long cheer in support of taking to the streets once again. None made any noise when asked if they disagreed with the protest plan.

The threat for the resumption of street protests was made at a Royal Plaza rally to mark the last's year bloodshed caused by the October 7 crackdown on yellow-shirt protesters.

Sondhi was speaking during the first year anniversary ceremony which marked the violent police crackdown on the PAD protesters last year. Police fired tear gas into the protesters in front of the Parliament, resulting in death and injuries of the protesters.

Thailand will forever be in political turmoil because of the King succession problem.

When (not if) the King pass on, who will hold the power? Ahbisit? Sodhi? Thaksin? Army?

Everybody speculates but none is brave enough to speak out due to Les Majestes Law.

Sodhi, yellow shirt, professed to be 100% loyal to the monarchy, and anyone/thing against him now is against the King, FOR NOW

Thaksin. red shirt, tremendously beloved by 60% or more Thai peasants, but disliked by the elites

Ahbisit, and his elite team, probably with some support from army.

So what could be the next development? King Bhumibol is by no means out of the woods yet. His symptoms may be easing, fever, imflamation, etc, but his illness could develop into "vascular dementia", which is similar to Alzheimer's disease.


In these circumstances, King Bhumibol would be unable to function as king, thus the Head of the Royal Privy Council, "His Majesty" General Prem Tinsulanonda, would be named "regent" under Thailand's constitution and take over king's duties.


Although Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn is the heir apparent to the Chakri throne, King Bhumibol has not named an heir. Relations between Sia O and General Prem are known to be strained. This could cause a serious crisis in Thailand's monarchy because the royal succession would not go smoothly.
