KLANG - A teenager who was splashed with petrol and set ablaze by robbers died from his injuries today after being in a coma for more than a month.
P. Yuvavinayagar, 15, suffered 80 per cent burns and had a leg amputated recently, the result of the burns he suffered while allegedly grappling with robbers who were trying to siphon petrol from his mother's motorcycle. He died at 6.30am in hospital today.
The victim was attacked in front of his family's shophouse in Desa Idaman, Taman Sentosa, here, on July 29.
He was discovered by his mother, lying on road with a blanket over his body which residents nearby had used to put out the fire.
The Form Three student from SMK Shahbandaraya in Kampung Jawa, here, was taken to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) before being transferred to Hospital Selayang.
The victim's sister, P. Tharsheni, 16, said she was at tuition while her mother was at work when the incident occurred.
"We rushed home on hearing the incident and he was already in critical condition," Tharsheni said at their family home.
She said that throughout her brother's stay in hospital he was conscious for only several minutes. He had to be sedated as he was in constant pain.
Trying to hold back tears, Tharseni said her brother's ambition was to be a policeman, adding that he had always been a cheerful and active boy.
The boy's mother, Sri Meanwhile, Mahalakshumi, 46, who works as a clerk at Sri Andalas assemblyman Dr Xavier Jayakumar's service centre, was to distraught to speak to reporters.
Yuvavinayagar's remains are expected to be cremated at the Simpang Lima crematorium.
Klang Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Mat Yusop said the motive for the attack is still under investigation as there were no witnesses.
"The mother lodged the police report two days after the incident. This has hampered our investigations," Mohamad said.
"So far we have not made any arrests but investigations are still on."
Mohamad said based on the initial medical report, the victim died due to organ failure following complications after the amputation.
