Teacher bashed teen and filmed her half-naked
Pearly Tan | The New Paper | Sat Apr 9 2011
Teacher living with girlfriend’s family attacks her sister after drinking alcohol.
HE WANTED to talk to her but she ignored him.
The primary school teacher, 29, flew into a rage and beat up the 19-year-old so badly that she lost consciousness.
His attack was so ferocious that he fractured his right thumb while beating her.
But that was not the end of the teen's ordeal.
While she was still unconscious, he stripped her of her shorts, pulled up her T-shirt and filmed her with his mobile phone.
Yesterday, the English language teacher was jailed 11/2 years after pleading guilty to one charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and a charge of outrage of modesty by using criminal force.
Another charge of insulting her modesty was taken into consideration during sentencing.
The parties cannot be named to protect the identity of the teen.
The court was told that the man moved into his girlfriend's flat about two years ago after he found out that he was adopted.
He shared a room with his girlfriend and her younger sister.
The man slept on the upper deck of a bunk bed, while his girlfriend slept on the lower deck.
Her sister, a guest service agent, slept on a mattress on the floor. She did not like having him in their flat and they seldom spoke to each other.
On May 24 last year, at about noon, the two were alone at home when the man went to the teen's bedroom to speak to her. He had earlier consumed one can and one bottle of beer.
The teen was sleeping and the man shook her shoulders to wake her up, but she ignored him and did not respond.
He then became angry and punched her on the face, head, neck and upper body with his right fist.
She struggled to get up as the man continued punching her and kicked her on her upper thigh. She fell to the floor unconscious.
The man then lifted her T-shirt, exposing her bra.
He removed her shorts and underwear and touched the teen's thigh and legs.
The man, who was not wearing underwear, took off his own bermudas and sat and stared at the teen's exposed lower body.
He later used his mobile phone to film her body before leaving the room and closing the door behind him.
The man went to the living room and sat on the sofa.
Just then, the teen's father returned home as he had forgotten to take some things with him.
When he went to his daughter's bedroom, he found her lying half-naked on the floor and thought she had been raped.
He immediately confronted the man and called the police, telling them: "My daughter is being raped. Now the guy is at here and my daughter also here.(sic)
"Can you send police here now. He never wear clothes all that.(sic)"
The unconscious teen was taken to the National University Hospital.
Bleeding
She was bleeding from both ears and had multiple bleeding spots in both eyes.
Her neck was red and swollen, and her body was covered with scratch marks, bruises and abrasions. Bite marks were also found over her left breast.
She was admitted to the high dependency unit and warded for eight days and given 22 days of medical leave.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Eunice Chong said that the man had betrayed the trust of his girlfriend's family by attacking and molesting her sister in their home.
While the man was diagnosed as suffering from major depressive disorder at the time of the incident, his self-control and judgment had not been completely eroded, DPP Chong added.
He was also not of unsound mind and had chosen to inflict multiple injuries and violate a hapless victim in the sanctity of her own room.
As such, DPP Chong urged the court to send a clear signal that violent behaviour as an outlet for depression cannot be condoned.
She said the teen suffered a loss of income of about $1,200 because she could not work.
Her medical bills came up to about $2,000 and she continues to have nightmares about the incident.
In the teacher's mitigation, defence counsel Stuart Palmer told Community Court Judge Ng Peng Hong that his client had been staying at his girlfriend's flat for two years without any problems.
For voluntarily causing grievous hurt, the teacher could have been jailed 10 years and caned.
For outrage of modesty by using criminal force, he could have been jailed two years and caned.
