Posted: 10 November 2011 1755 hrs
SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a man believed to be involved in at least five cases of robbery of taxi drivers in Bukit Merah housing estate, over a period of three weeks.
In most cases, the 43-year-old suspect is believed to have stopped the taxi, directing it to nearby destinations.
Before reaching the destination, he is said to have used a knife to demand money from the taxi drivers.
On all occasions, the police said the taxi drivers were unharmed after they gave up their valuables.
The man would then flee the scene on foot.
He is said to have stolen more than S$1,200 worth of valuables from the taxi drivers since late October.
Police arrested the suspect on Wednesday night when he boarded a taxi at Bukit Merah Central.
A foldable multi-purpose knife and a mobile phone on him were seized from him.
The suspect will be charged on Friday in court with armed robbery which carries a maximum punishment of 14 years' jail and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane.
