GEORGE TOWN: The number of Indians involved in violent crime has increased so much that Penang police have set up a task force to handle such cases.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said Indians were involved in 271 cases last year compared to 321 cases to date, an increase of 18.5 per cent.

"These include 117 unarmed robbery cases and 13 murder cases last year and the number has risen to 158 and 29 respectively this year.

"The all-Indian task force is led by an ASP who will be assisted by 18 personnel, including two inspectors," he said yesterday.

On a separate matter, Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mazlan Kesah said the two men, aged 32 and 36, who allegedly slashed a lorry transport company operator to death on Nov 21, were arrested at about 5pm on the island yesterday.

"One of them tested positive for drug abuse and has five previous convictions. The other was wanted by us for causing unrest with dangerous weapons in Tanjung Tokong," he said.
