He is a very sharp man, articulates facts and figures to support his points. I suggest SDP uses an overhead projector in their future rallies. It will help Mr Tan's points get across even more.

Wow! This guy is certainly one of the hidden gems of this election rally!

He rightly points out that Pap has taken the easy ways out of "improving" the economy. Import cheap labour, building 2 casinos...

GE: Tan Jee Say responds to reserves issue
The SDP candidate for Holland Bukit Timah GRC, Tan Jee Say, has challenged the People's Action Party to publish the figures for the national reserves.

The SDP candidate for Holland Bukit Timah GRC, Tan Jee Say, has challenged the People's Action Party to publish the figures for the national reserves.

He fired this salvo in the ongoing war of words between the two parties over the issue of the country's reserves when speaking at the SDP rally yesterday evening.

Mr Tan had previously said that 60 billion dollars from the reserves was enough to fund his economic proposals, which includes shrinking the manufacturing sector and spending more on the needy.

And he had described this amount as small change.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan who is leading the PAP team in the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC had said he expected Mr Tan to do his homework better before making such a claim.

But Mr Tan said it is very easy to establish whether it was small change or not.

"Just publish the figures of our national reserves with detailed breakdown. Singaporeans have been wanting to know what our national reserves are. Dr Balakrishnan, if you can get it published, Singaporeans will be very grateful to you."

Mr Tan, an investment advisor, was the former principal private secretary to former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

The new PAP is building houses out of straw, says SDP's Michelle Lee

SINGAPORE - The country will not fall apart if the Opposition is voted into Parliament, claimed Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Michelle Lee Juen pointing out: "PAP is not the Civil Service".

"Our civil servants are Singaporeans too with families and homes too. They will not run away from their job and leave their duties just because there's opposition in Parliament," said Ms Lee, 35, a member of the SDP's "A" team that is contesting in the Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency at their first rally.

Ms Lee, who was a financial analyst before switching to a career in education, likened the election to investing one's money, where "diversification is the key to reducing risks".

"Having only the PAP in government is like putting all your eggs in one basket. Will you put all your life savings in one investment product?" she asked the rally crowd at Commonwealth last night.

Echoing a point made by several other SDP speakers, Ms Lee said that while the "old" PAP had done good for Singapore, the "new" PAP's track record has "blemishes".

"We have been reminded not to rock Singapore's foundation and we have absolutely no intention of rocking that. The new PAP, on the other hand, are building houses of straw on this strong foundation when they should be building houses of stone," she said.

Such straw houses include the casinos, which have placed temptation in the way of "many husbands and fathers" and exacerbated problems with illegal moneylending; as well as the lack of accountability over billions lost in overseas investments by state-owned vehicles like Temasek Holdings.

Besides such national issues, the SDP speakers also zoomed in on constituency concerns. Candidate for the Bukit Panjang single-seat ward Alec Tok, for instance, said his recent chats with Bukit Panjang residents have highlighted three issues - one of which are the elderly's healthcare expenses for chronic illnesses.

Mr Tok, 46, a theatre director who was the SDP's surprise candidate against PAP incumbent Dr Teo Ho Pin, recounted asking one senior resident if he had enough to spend on medicine. The answer in Hokkien rougly translated as: "Save on eating, will be enough."

"When have we become a society that has to stop eating so that we can buy our medicine?" asked Mr Tok, who spoke mostly in Mandarin.

Mr Tok also touched on the inconvenience of public transport as well as the emergence of gangsters and secret societies in Bukit Panjang - a problem he linked to the larger issue of the younger generation's distancing from society.

Citing a Singapore Polytechnic survey done last year which showed that 60 per cent of youth below the age of 23 think of emigrating, Mr Tok said: "This shows that PAP, no matter how well they have performed, if it ultimately can't make the younger generation stay, it means they have failed."

Academic James Gomez, a member of the SDP team challenging Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan's Sembawang GRC, zoomed in again on Mr Khaw's 2009 comments about how Singaporeans could save money by going to nursing homes for the elderly across the Causeway.

"If Mr Khaw wants to send the elderly overseas, we'll send him to Johor Bahru," said Mr Gomez. In an earlier riposte to the SDP criticism on this issue, Mr Khaw had said they would twist his words to suit their political purpose and reiterated that he had never suggested that people dump their parents in Johor.

Michelle Lee Juen, 35, is a graduate of the London School of Economics with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Government and Economics, scoring first-class honours in the Government component of her degree programme. She worked in the Monetary Authority of Singapore. She later worked for Salomon Smith Barney Citibank as a financial analyst, and Mercer Management Consulting in Hong Kong.

In 2002, Michelle made a career shift and became an English and Literature teacher: working with children rather than money has been infinitely more fulfilling. She taught at New Town and Bukit View Secondary Schools and the Singapore International School in Hong Kong.

Michelle is an active volunteer, having participated in hospital visiting programmes, spent some time at an orphanage in China and an immigrant school in London. She enjoys working with children and currently teaches a group of underprivileged children in the Holland area and delivers food to needy residents.

She is a dedicated mother of three, and a successful practitioner of the work-life balance.

As a teacher, she is disturbed by the apathy and lack of sympathy in our youth generated by the stifling and overly competitive demands of our education system. As a parent, an educator, and a Singaporean, she feels it imperative for compassion to be brought back to bear on all aspects of governance in Singapore.

Her global experience in finance, consultancy and education stand her in good stead to serve the needs of the people of Singapore.

With respect, I believe that it is unfair for SM Goh to allege that TJS would not have been promoted to Permanent Secretary, which was the apparent reason that TJS left the Admin Service. Allow me to use an analogy of a lawyer or an accountant who was not made a partner at a firm, and had to make a living at clients or industry. The same individual who is not considered partner material, can, and I have seen several, if not more, who has done very well, after leaving the professional firms.

Accordingly, even if TJS would not be promoted to Permanent Secretary, he is a very good candidate to be a MP. I urge those who are eligible to vote in his GRC, to vote for TJS and his SDP team mates.

Wooden claimed that he made the clarification because TJS had "benefitted from being known as the former PPS" of Wooden.
He then went on to say that TJS was an able and hardworking PPS, but left because Wooden felt he could not make PS.
Isn't Wooden simply reinforcing the point? TJS is known as the former PPS of Wooden and not a civil service high flyer or a potential PS or anything else.
He was perhaps trying to do the opposite, but all he has done is endorse TJS.

Secondly, TJS had a very successful career in investment banking after he left the civil service. If I'm not mistaken he was once the MD of Morgan Grenfell or something like that.
Many objective people will say that such a person is possibly even more capable than the typical PS.

Thank you Wooden for your endorsement of opposition candidates.

Tan Jee Say did not make the cut: SM Goh

SENIOR Minister Goh Chok Tong disclosed on Saturday night that his former principal private secretary (PPS) Tan Jee Say did not make the cut to be a Permanent Secretary, and that was why he resigned from the Civil Service.

Mr Tan, 57, is a Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate contesting in four-member Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

'He was an able, hardworking PPS, but I did not think he would make it as a Permanent Secretary,' said SM Goh, speaking at a PAP rally in Marine Parade GRC. He is leading the PAP team contesting there.

This was why Mr Tan resigned to go into the private sector to advance his career, SM Goh added.

Mr Tan went to Oxford University on an Overseas Merit Scholarship, and served as PPS to then Deputy Prime Minister Goh from 1985 to 1990.

He left the Administrative Service in 1990 to join investment bank Morgan Grenfell Asia, before moving into fund management.

Now a private investor, he said he joined the opposition because he was dismayed at the direction Singapore's society and economy had been taking in recent years.

SM Goh said Mr Tan had not made a smart choice in joining the SDP.

Tan Jee Say said he did not want to join NSP and contest SM Goh out of respect for his former boss.

But this is how the senior minister repays the Mr Tan's courtesy.

Btw, whether SM's claims are true or not, Tan has excelled very well in the banking and finance sector on his own 2 feet. Yet to see if some ministers can do the same in the private sector.
