Taipei, June 29 (CNA) Taiwan has not been invited to attend the upcoming inauguration of Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr., a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesman said Wednesday.
MOFA deputy spokesperson Tsuei Ching-lin (崔靜麟) told CNA that they had learned from Manila -- which does not formally recognize Taiwan and instead maintains diplomatic relations with Beijing -- that no Taiwanese government representatives would be invited to the ceremony slated for Thursday.
Despite the lack of an invite, Tsuei said Taiwan's representative office in Manila had already successfully passed on President Tsai Ing-wen's (蔡英文) congratulations to Marcos Jr.
During the 2010 inauguration of ex-Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, Taiwan's former Health Minister Yeh Ching-chuan (葉金川) attended the ceremony in a personal capacity and passed on a congratulatory message from then-President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九).
This marked the last time that a former or serving Taiwanese government official attended the inauguration of a Philippine president.
According to MOFA, the Philippines is an important country in Taiwan's New Southbound Policy and both nations have maintained close trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges over the years.
MOFA noted that there were around 150,000 Filipino migrant workers in Taiwan and that bilateral trade from January to April had grown 20.6 percent year-over-year, with two-way trade volumes reaching US$9 billion in 2021.
MOFA added that it was looking forward to working closely with the new Philippine government to enhance even closer exchanges on all fronts for the benefit of both people.
The inauguration of Marcos Jr. as the 17th president of the Philippines is scheduled to take place at around noon on Thursday at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila.
Marcos Jr. was elected in a landslide the 2022 Philippine presidential election on May 9, clinching nearly 60 percent of the vote.
The 64-year-old politician, who served as a senator from 2010 to 2016, is the second child and only son of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and former first lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos.
