SINGAPORE : Police have busted a major local syndicate involved in the sale and distribution of counterfeit clothing and sportswear goods.
A 14-hour operation was conducted on Thursday.
The police, after months of intensive intelligence-gathering, said they identified the suspects as members of a local syndicate that sold counterfeit goods at a retail shop in Pasir Panjang.
During the raid, three Singaporean men were arrested and more than 11,000 items - including soccer jerseys bearing the trademarks of popular football clubs - were seized.
The seizure has an estimated street value of about S$160,000.
Assistant Director of the Specialised Crime Division, Criminal Investigation Department, DAC Goh Lam Kiong, said: "Police will continue to take strict enforcement action against pirates who profit at the expense of legitimate businesses."
Those convicted of infringing goods for trade or manufacture in which a registered trade mark is falsely applied may be fined up to S$10,000 per article, or up to S$100,000 for all items.
They can also be jailed five years or both.
