WORKERS' Party (WP) candidate Koh Choong Yong has urged voters not to credit the PAP for the plans to improve their estates, including Sengkang West, where he is contesting against the ruling party's Dr Lam Pin Min.

He said: 'Is it the PAP's money or is it the people's money? And who do you think came up with these plans - the PAP or is it the effective and efficient civil servants? The civil service is different from the PAP.

'The PAP candidate for Sengkang West (Dr Lam) said he has transformed the ward with parks and swimming pools....isn't the park planned by NParks? Isn't the swimming pool planned by the Singapore Sports Council? Isn't he riding on the coat-tails of the civil servants?'

Mr Koh, was among the WP candidates who spoke at the opposition party's rally, held at an open field along Kallang Avenue on Monday evening.

The WP is fielding 23 candidates in this elections to contest eight wards, including Moulmein-Kallang GRC.

Other candidates who spoke at the rally included WP chairman Sylvia Lim, who is part of the party's 'A' team contesting in Aljunied GRC against a team led by Foreign Minister George Yeo.

She urged voters to give the PAP a wake-up call by voting for the WP, explaining that this would result in a more attentive Government.

After the PAP lost four seats in the 1991 general elections, she said the Government moved to address residents' cost-of-living concerns.

'What happened after the 1991 general election showed that the PAP take election results very seriously,' she said. 'If you vote for the opposition, the PAP will wake up and take concrete steps to address your concerns.'
