When people write in to newspapers or make comments about how wonderful certain important people have been or what a wonderful job they have done, do you think they really believe it and simply want to praise them publicly?
Or do they want something or some benefit?
Or do they simply want their names to be associated with the important people and for themselves to be "recognised"?
As much as I detest some of these people for "buttering up" in a rather eloquent and articulate manner, I am also appalled by those who criticise but in a rather crude and inarticulate manner on subject matters where they know little or nothing about.
Sometimes when we watch these Taiwan talk shows, you'll hear some people calling in and saying in Mandarin:
"Wei, Tao ge ah..............." (Tao Ge is Li Tao the host of 2100, a Taiwan talk show)
"Tao ge" (call him again as if they were best buds)
"Wa ga le gong hor...................." (For those who don't know Hokkien, this means "I tell you hor")
And he will proceed to ramble on, mostly unintelligibly, about the subject matter, be it a police investigation or an economic agreement, of which he knows little or nothing about.
Can sense that the host and his guests barely tolerate such callers and their drivel, but they have to show that they are "listening to the people" since this show is for the people and they depend on people for ratings.
But I don't have to tolerate this and I usually turn the channel.
Perhaps being a balls licking sycophant and being a snob is just a fine line.
