KUALA LUMPUR: A NEW method of concealing drugs was discovered when police found 13 barrels, containing a mixture of sand and an undisclosed amount of liquid
methamphetamine (syabu), in a warehouse in Puchong on Tuesday.
Federal Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said this was the first time police had encountered such a method.
"These syndicates are always trying new ways to smuggle drugs in and out of the country," he said in Bukit Aman yesterday.
The latest modus operandi came to light when police arrested four Iranian men in Puchong on suspicion of being drug traffickers.
The suspects led police to a warehouse at Taman Perindustrian Puchong where they found 13 blue barrels containing damp sand.
Initial investigations revealed that the sand, weighing 861.5kg in total, was laced with liquid syabu.
Noor Rashid said police had yet to determine the value of the drugs as it needed to be processed first but estimated it to be worth millions of ringgit.
The barrels originated from Mexico and was smuggled into the country via air cargo.
The four suspects, aged between 31 and 36, have been remanded for seven days.
