SINGAPORE: Singapore on Thursday confirmed three more cases of Influenza A (H1N1), bringing the number of infected persons in the country to four.

A day earlier, Singapore confirmed its first case of A(H1N1) flu, in a 22-year-old female Singapore Management University (SMU) student who recently returned to the city-state from New York.

The second confirmed case is a 43-year-old Singapore Permanent Resident who returned to Singapore from San Francisco via Manila on Tuesday (26 May) at 1750 hours.

She was on Singapore Airlines flight SQ 917 and was seated at 33H. She became unwell while on board.

The third confirmed case is a 28-year-old American woman working in Singapore. She returned to Singapore from Honolulu via Tokyo on Tuesday (26 May) at 2353 hours, on United Airlines flight UA 803. She was seated at 33C and became unwell on 26 May.

The fourth confirmed case is a 28-year-old Singaporean man who returned to Singapore from Chicago via Hong Kong on 25 May at 0036hrs. He was on United Airlines flight UA 895 and was seated at 55H. He became unwell on 25 May.

The patients are currently being treated at the Communicable Disease Centre at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

In a statement, the Health Ministry says their symptoms are relatively mild and all the patients are in stable condition.

Contact tracing of their close contacts, including passengers on the same flights, is ongoing. They will be quarantined and provided with antiviral prophylaxis.

The Health Ministry says that passengers within three rows in front and behind the cases who have not been contacted by MOH yet should call the MOH hotline at 1800-333 9999.

The affected rows for SQ 917 are 30-36; for UA 803, the affected rows are 30-36 and for UA 895, the affected rows are 52-58.

The Health Ministry reminds those who have travelled in the preceding 7 days to affected countries to seek immediate medical attention once they develop influenza-like symptoms, and call 993 for an ambulance. This, it says, will help minimise the risk of infecting those around them.

Meanwhile, the MOH has also reminded all medical practitioners and healthcare institutions to continue to be vigilant for suspect cases.

The fuck cursed USA is the source of our problems, why every H1N1 had been exported to SGP from USA?

When is PAP govt going to issue travel advisory and impose proper measure against free and easy entry into SGP from USA?

Everyone landed in SGP from USA must be held quarantined for a period to ensure absolutely no H1N1 before allowing to travel freely in SGP. Travel to the USA by Singaporeans must be advised to withhold or delayed until such epidemic is over. If they still want to go to USA, they must be prepared to get quarantined for a necessary period upon return.

What a stupid way to use mathematics!

Why not say that when you donate another dollar to charity, you have increase your donation by 100%?

By the same token when your wife gives birth to another baby, she is extremely productive because she has increased her birth rate by 100%?

Surprising thing is that the A virus reaches our shore quite belately considering that Singapore is such an open society and that every day there are thousands of people coming in and out of the country - to USA no less. That gives us time to be better prepared so that our kids and population as a whole is better protected.

The infection could easily spread beyond the 6 rows of seats around the infected person. The sick person most probably has gone to those few toilet cubicles in the plane, blew the nose (nasal discharge) or coughed and spat out Phlegm from the sore throat and touched the toilet seat(lifting it up or putting it down), turn on/off the tap etc with the mucus (viral laden) contaminated hands.

Any passenger from any seat in the plane going in after that infected person would be infected.

In view of the pandemic threat and the need to travel between countries; perhaps the "WHO" should be looking at ways of preventing or minimising virus spread via air-travel in the following ways:

1. One way of minimising spread of airborne, surface contact viruses would be to have some virucidal/bacteriocidal odourless aerosol (non-toxic to humans) that is periodically released into the cabin and even more frequently in the toilet cubicles to reduce if not elimate the microbial count in the air.

2. The ventilation of the plane should be increased and not recycle the same STALE air in long haul flights to save fuel costs.

3. Could a virus killing UV light (non-lethal to humans) be installed in the toilet cubicles to reduce if not eradicate the viral count?

4. Passengers in the plane who are coughing or sneezing should immediately be provided and made to wear a face mask.

5. Passengers should carry with them a 60ml bottle of anti microbial hand sanitizer (non rinse) to clean their hands while on board before meals etc.

If the air quality in Surgical theatres/burnt Wards can be rendered with a low bacterial count with positive pressure lamellar air flow. And 'clean rooms' with dust free air is possible in SEMI-CONDUCTOR factories. Why can't airplanes adopt the same measures in preventing pandemic spread of viruses when air travel is so widespread?
