SINGAPORE: Singapore swimmer Yip Pin Xiu has won a silver medal — the country’s first at the Paralympics — in the women’s 50—metre freestyle in Beijing.

She came in at 57.43 seconds.
Despite not coming in first in the finals, she maintains the new world and paralympic record she set in the heats earlier Saturday, with a timing of 57.04 seconds.
Mexico’s Patricia Valle, who won the gold, managed a close 57.05 seconds in the finals.
Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan was present to cheer Yip on and presented flowers for her event.
As a show of gratitude, Yip presented the medal to her coach Ang Peng Siong.
"Happy, because it is the first silver for the Paralympics, for the swimming," Yip told Channel NewsAsia when asked how she felt about her win.
Singapore already has two bronze medals in the Paralympics. They were won by riding ace Laurentia Tan in the equestrian events.
