Survey on Singaporeans' views on Town Council saga: a full report

Spread out over three days on 19, 20 and 22 November 2008, we visited three constituencies in Singapore to seek the views of ordinary Singaporeans on the above matter.

We approached 166 Singaporeans, out of which 51 agreed to be interviewed.

Here are some stats:

1. Do you know about that some of the Town Councils’ sinking funds have been exposed to the Lehman brothers credit-linked products ?

Yes: 28 No: 23

2. Do you blame the government for the loss ?

Yes: 14 No: 27 Don’t know: 15

3. Should the Town Council use public funds for investment purposes ?

Yes: 8 No: 28 Don’t know: 15

4. Should the Town Councils place their sinking funds in banks or to be to invest the money to grow it

Banks: 31 Investment: 10 Don’t know: 5

5. Should the Town Council publish its statement of account to the public like major charities ?

Yes: 40 No: 2 Don’t know: 9
