Leaders of charities should be paid well too
I REFER to Monday's report, "$500,000 pay for New Creation Church leader", about the salary of Senior Pastor Joseph Prince.
Our society seems to have developed this mentality that certain professions - particularly charities and other do-ers of good - should not be paid well. I do not understand this sentiment.
Charities, just like other organisations, need to attract talented people to serve as their leaders. If charity executives were paid poorly, we would be left with poorly run charities - and our precious dollars would be inefficiently used.
Of course, it is important for charities to be properly regulated to ensure they are not financially mismanaged. But why should we have a society where only lawyers, doctors and bankers are paid handsomely?

i think well-paid or not depends on the contributions of that particular individual to the organisation. yes, charitable workers can be paid generously. but what has the pastor done for his organisation and society to warrant such a high pay? maybe it's time that these powerful churches do smth for society at large, rather than just focus on its members and leaders.
i noted that the chinese temple, kwam im hood cho at waterloo street has been giving out bursaries to the needy regularly, regardless of what religion they belong to. also together with the kong ming san monastery, it recently sponsored a mediacorp programme on dealing with diabetes.
i'm curious as to what the rich churches have done for singaporeans, apart from organising entertaining services. if anyone knows, pls post an answer. thanks.
also, why is reverend ming yi being put on trial for a 50K loan when another religious leader is earning 500k? seriously, maybe ming yi shld have just listed the money as his pay and bonus, like this other guy. then he wldn't be on trial now.

robertpclim,
There is a very thin line you are on - on one side is idol worshipping!
The message, not the messenger, may I remind you my friend?

Leaders of charities should be characters who have the passion to sacrifice their own keep and life for the type/kind of organisations they are representing.
We know who they are genuinely in hearts ,by their frugal lifestyles and simple manners of outreaching to the common folks who will benefit from their leadeship. Lee Kong Chin once reflected"one MUST give back to society what one has taken from the society." Tan Kah Kee, his father-in-law likewise too lead the charities with similar spirit of reaching out to all regardless of his own salary/payment.
These are just two simple examples of characters who had paved the way to prosper our national spirit in charities leadership. To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often. Most of the trouble in the world of charities leadership today is caused by people wanting to be important. Let's help our poverty striken citizens to find it within themselves to live with dignity, not just merely handout. Peace in pure heart charities.
