Two thieves tortured an elderly man to death with a knife and his own walking stick during a burglary in Wiltshire, a jury has been told.

Winchester Crown Court heard John James and Joby Barney conspired with three others to burgle 75-year-old Reginald John Baker's home on 5 September 2008.

Jurors were shown pictures from a CCTV camera in Mr Baker's house which filmed the break-in and torture.

Mr James, 19, and Mr Barney, 25, both deny murder and conspiracy to burgle.

Mr Baker was tortured for half an hour by the pair, who tried to make him say where his savings were, jurors heard.

Knocked to ground

The court was told how Mr Baker had been the victim of an earlier burglary on 30 July.

After that incident, police had installed a CCTV camera at his house as a precaution.

The jury was shown footage in which Mr Baker was knocked to the ground and then dragged into the sitting room where he was tortured.

Prosecutor Christopher Parker QC told the court that Reginald Baker suffered from prostate cancer, which had spread to his bones making him frail.

Mr Parker said: "John James and Joby Barney burst into Mr Baker's home through the front door.

"They knocked him to the ground and over 35 minutes they ransacked his house.

"They hit Mr Baker and they tortured him to make him reveal where he had hidden the remaining part of his savings.

"In doing so the injuries suggest they used their hands, their feet, they used a knife and they used Mr Baker's own walking stick.

"The injuries they inflicted on him were so serious that they killed him."

Mr Barney, of Ringwood Road, Alderholt, Dorset, and Mr James, of The Brambles, Salisbury, are on trial with John Wilkinson, 40.

Mr Wilkinson, of Ford Lane, Ferndown, Dorset, denies a charge of burglary of Mr Baker's home in Landford on 30 July last year and conspiracy to burgle.

On Wednesday two other men, Daniel Coker, 23, of The Brambles, Salisbury, Wiltshire, and 19-year-old Trevor Gray, of Blackfriars, Salisbury, both admitted manslaughter and conspiracy to burgle.

They were remanded in custody to be sentenced at a later date.

The trial of the three other defendants continues.
