SINGAPORE: With four months to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG), the Education Ministry has yet to decide on whether to shift the academic calendar to allow students to support the Games.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Education & Ministry of Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli said this at the launch of six new Junior Sports Academies at Ai Tong School on Thursday.
The academies were first started in 2008, and the numbers have grown since then.
Two sports - bowling and artistic gymnastics - were also added this year.
The Ministry intends to expand the number of centres and sports in future.
However, there is still no cheer for students who want to support the action during the Youth Olympic Games in August.
The Games from August 14 to 26 coincides with the school academic calendar.
The Ministry had earlier made adjustments to the 2010 sports calendar, in support of the YOG.
Most of the competitions in the National School games will be played and completed in the first half of 2010.
"Importantly, we want our students to get involved either as volunteers or as participants," said Mr Masagos.
"We have not yet decided what we will actually do at this point of time, we still have to look at what schools need to adjust, but certainly we will try and encourage and support their participation."
