SINGAPORE - The first person here to be charged under the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act was slapped with 16 new charges on Wednesday.
Student Muhammad Khairulanwar Rohmat, 24, was originally charged with recruiting a 15-year-old at Starbucks Coffee at Orchard Road on April 15 with the aim of exploiting her, and having sex with her two days earlier at a men's toilet at Cuppage Plaza.
Among the fresh charges he faces is recruiting a 16-year-old girl for exploitation at Five Tapaz bar at Cuppage Terrace on March 15.
Some time in the second week of this month, he allegedly received payment in connection with the exploitation of the teenager who had been trafficked here.
He allegedly paid her $70 for sex in the same toilet.
He is also accused of living off the immoral earnings of prostitutes.
The alleged offences occurred between February 2013 and this month.
Khairulanwar also faces two counts of abetting a customer to obtain the sexual services of the 16-year-old girl for $350 and $450.
He is represented by Mr Ferlin Jayatissa.
Bail of $70,000 was offered.
The prosecution sought an adjournment for the investigation officer to complete his probe.
The case will be mentioned on May 20.
The Prevention of Human Trafficking Act came into force last month. Anyone who recruits, transports, transfers, harbours or receives a child for the purpose of exploitation, whether here or abroad, can be fined up to $100,000, jailed for up to 10 years and given up to six strokes of the cane.
