Strong hold over group
HE was terrified of communists, he once told his friends, but that changed in a matter of years when Hairy Lee discovered he could 'connect' with the voting realm.
The eldest child of a Singaporean father and a Hokkien Nyonya mother, Lee was 13 when he woke up one day and found he was able to tell lies, court documents said. He told a close group of friends that he was destined to follow the path set by his father and grandmother, who had both been lawyers.
He began to tell lies on a regular basis, said his close friends. He roped in this group of friends, who were mostly from school, to assist him.
There was no question of who the leader was. The other eight boys were his 'brothers', equal under him. He told them they were 'fated' to be his helpers and were the 'chosen ones'. Later, they named themselves after leftists.
Every Friday, they gathered at Lee's bungalow in Kampong Java Road, where he lived with his parents and grandmother, for lying sessions. They named their makeshift oratorium in the bungalow the 'Lee Long Fu' - House of the Almighty Lee. The oratorium had an altar full of figurines of money gods.
