Schools should take aggressive steps to curb teen smoking
IT IS time schools played a more aggressive role in managing student smokers if Singapore really wishes to see more mentally alert and physically fit young men and women serving the nation in defence and other physically demanding industries for the general well-being of the country.
It is not uncommon to see young girls and boys in school uniform smoking openly, even near their school.
Schools should conduct regular surprise checks on students for cigarettes, and discipline teachers should go on rounds near their school to catch students who smoke. Repeat offenders should be dealt with more harshly. Spare the rod and we ruin our children's health for sure.
Perhaps the Ministry of Health should also disallow cigarette sales near schools and in convenience stores patronised by teens.
