TAIPEI - A TAIWANESE marine biologist said on Tuesday that he has found a new species of crab which is coloured like a polka-dotted strawberry.
Professor Ho Ping-ho of the National Taiwan Ocean University said he made the discovery while carrying out research on the environmental impact of a shipwreck last year on the beaches of southern Kenting National Park, known for its rich marine life. 'One was dead while the other was dying when they were found on a beach of Chialoshui,' Prof Ho said, referring to a scenic coastal village in the national park. Water in the area had been polluted by a cargo ship that ran aground. He said the two female crabs resemble the species living in the areas around Hawaii, Polynesia and Mauritius. But they have a distinctive clam-shaped shell, with the bigger one measuring about 2.5cm wide.
